The Impact

Web-Based Malware Hurts Businesses:
Customer Loss, Brand Damage, Support Costs

When hackers exploit vulnerabilities of websites and infect users, the outcome could be devastating.

What Could Go Wrong

If your website suffers a malware attack...

  • Your users are at risk of getting infected with a virus
  • Your website loses customers and suffers brand damage
  • You and your customers are at risk of data theft
  • Your website is at risk of being blacklisted
Your valuable customers may get a virus downloaded to their PC by visiting and interacting with your site. The image below is an example of a fake anti-virus program that users may see if your web site gets infected.

In addition to loss of traffic, customers, and revenue, businesses can have their brand and reputation put at risk if their web site gets infected.

  • Customers that encounter malware on a web site may lose trust and confidence and are likely to warn others
  • News of Malware attacks are often reported in the media, on blogs, and on social networks (see example below from Twitter)

  • E-commerce merchants and financial services companies risk having their customer data stolen

Infected websites are blacklisted by Google, Firefox, IE, and anti-virus companies, causing losses of traffic, revenue and brand

Dasient performed a survey of hundreds of webmasters in July 2009 and discovered that:

  • 40% of the respondents were blacklisted more than once
  • 73% of the sites remained blacklisted for more than one day
  • 48% of the sites lost at least 40% of their traffic, 16% lost over 80% of their traffic
  • 35% of the customers spent more than 8 hours fixing the problem
